1. It's all in the name

Choose your business name and register a domain name that reflects either the name of your business or the main concept of your business. You can register your domain name separately, like at GoDaddy, or wait and register it with the same company you choose for hosting.

Your domain name is a separate annual expense from anything else. You are paying to have it registered and you need to continue to pay the annual fee in order to maintain ownership of your domain.

In the old days of the internet, the cost of a domain name was typically $35 a year. Do not pay that much. There are now registrars who offer domain names for as little as $5-$10 a year.

2. Choose your hosting company.

This is the company you will pay to allow your website files to reside on their servers. Your domain name will point to the files. The amount you pay for hosting can vary greatly from company to company. Sometimes you do indeed get what you pay for. Super cheap is not always your best bet. I did, though, look around and find one company I happen to think is an excellent choice for the cost.

Host Monster is located in the United States (not all hosting companies are) and has 24/7 toll-free phone support. I signed for a two-year hosting plan and it came to all of $5.95 a month. On top of that, the plan I chose gives me one domain name for free. I will not have to pay to renew the domain name for as long as I keep this hosting plan. And, I can host unlimited additional domain names on the same plan. I currently have three websites with three unique domain names sharing this one plan.

My favorite thing about HostMoster is the customer service. I have gone to their website and used their live online chat and I have called them on their help line. Each time I called was near midnight and one of those times was actually a Saturday night. These guys have their help desks fully staffed all of the time. And, I could understand them. That goes a long way these days.

3. Design your site

If you know how to build a website already, you’re good to go. If not, you can choose one of a few options.

Hire a designer to build your site to specifications. There are literally thousands of folks out there who do this for a living. Do not agree to per hour charges, but rather a package price. One idea would be to find a website you like and ask who designed it for them.

Find a template you like and alter it to your needs. This could be as simple as inserting your own logo, text and product photos.

Buy some simple software like Microsoft FrontPage and teach yourself basic web design. The WYSIWYG interface makes it pretty easy to pick up. You need to choose HOW you want to sell your bows. You can go the simple route and sign up for a Paypal Merchant Services account and then merely place the Buy Now buttons next to your products, or you could incorporate shopping cart software and allow your site to operate like any other online store, with a check out process. Host Monster offers the free AgoraCart already installed on its system. You can see a live demo on their website. Host Monster also makes it easy to install the shopping cart programs Cube Cart, OS Commerce and Zen Cart.

4.  Get the Word Out

This might be the biggest challenge. On the internet the phrase “if you build it, they will come” does not always apply. You need to summit your URL to the search engines, use your URL in your signatures when you post online and perhaps even buy some advertising. I know some hosting companies give you a deal where you get some free advertising dollars to place Adsense and Yahoo ads. I know Host Monster does.

5.  Network

Trade links with friends and other online business owners. Have a business card made up (you can get them free at Vista Print) and pass them out to everyone you encounter. Place inexpensive ads in your newsletters. Basically, network until you drop!
